Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Commissioner Thomas Meredith resigned today effective November 15.
According to a statement issued by the IHL, Meredith will be available to the Board of Trustees until that time.
"The board is expected to accept Commissioner Meredith's request during its next meeting, currently scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2008," according to the statement.
"During his tenure, Commissioner Meredith made a positive difference for Mississippi's eight public universities and within Mississippi's public education system," said IHL Board President Amy Whitten. "We are grateful for his many accomplishments, and are confident his vision of increasing the quantity of baccalaureate degree holders of even higher quality will continue."
The Reflector will have updates on Meredith's resignation and Friday's IHL meeting in Jackson as they become available.

Thank goodness; however, his statement is absurd. . . . yeh, right, he TRIED to pay for the trees. It's difficult sometimes to have any confidence in leadership when this type has risen to the top to such astounding pay at our expense. (Continued…)

I wonder if Meredith has uprooted those trees in tears yet.

I'm glad to see he's done the right thing. Whoever the next commissioner is (hopefully not a current IHL board member) should take this as a lesson as to how not to act in such a position. (Continued…)

I've known Tom Meredith and his wife for several years and know that he is a man of character, honor, and the utmost integrity. You can trust that what he says is absolutely true. (Continued…)

Sue,
You should meet more people. If a man who essentially takes a 12,000 dollar bribe is considered one of the finest people you know, then you need to know more people. (Continued…)

Tyler,
While I'm sure Mark Keenum is a swell fellow and all, the IHL's last experiment with hiring someone who doesn't have a history of academic leadership was a failure (quitting after less than 2 years on the job). (Continued…)

Sue, you can keep talking about your personal relationship with Meredith, but you do realize how ridiculous you sound, right? I have friends who have been honorable to me, but if they do something questionable in another context, I would have no integrity if I defended them based on my friendship. (Continued…)

So what you're saying is that Meredith had no idea Watson used MSU equipment and personnel to plant the trees? Because ultimately, it doesn't matter if Meredith was willing to pay--the irrefutable fact is that university resources were used on his private property, and he let it happen. (Continued…)

What common sense dictates, Sue, is that after serving 40 years in the education community, one should know better than to get caught abusing your position of power. (Continued…)
